The cost of gas this week has dropped near the lowest price it has been in three years just in time for travelers to head out on holiday road trips.
The national average price for a gallon of gas is currently $3.03, according to AAA, and sits below $3 in many states. The national average hasn’t been below $3 since May 2021.
“The national average is tantalizingly close to falling below $3 a gallon, and it could happen in a few days,” Andrew Gross, a AAA spokesperson, said in a statement. “But 32 states already have an average below or well below $3.”
Both Ohio and Delaware have the lowest gas prices in the country with an average of $2.89 per gallon. That was followed by Georgia with an average price of $2.91 per gallon and Virginia with an average price of $2.92 per gallon.
On a county level, Gross said Hockley County in Texas appears to have the lowest average at $2.30 per gallon.
On the other end of the spectrum was Hawaii, where gas is currently averaging $4.56 per gallon, the highest in the country. That was followed by California, where travelers can find gas averaging $4.38 per gallon. While California’s rate is higher than many other states in the country, it still remains well below 2022 levels when gas reached more than $6 per gallon in the state.
When it comes to electric vehicles, AAA said the national average for a kilowatt of electricity at a public EV charging station today is 34 cents.
The most expensive state to charge in is Hawaii where it costs 56 cents per kilowatt hour at a public charging station, followed by Montana where it costs 45 cents, West Virginia where it costs 44 cents, and New Hampshire where it costs 42 cents. Kansas is the least expensive state at 21 cents per kilowatt hour.
When taking a winter road trip with an electric vehicle, travelers should keep in mind the battery will drain faster and they will have to charge more often.
